The concept of a Federated Solution Architecture has its origin in the cross-functional management literature where there exist the need to manage or monitor across organizational units. If cross-functional business processes are aligned, an alignment of information systems and data is also possible. The federated solution architecture approach is best for those organizations that do not have a fully centralized top-down approach to architectural planning, but maintain their architectures in individual organizational components.
